Junior Development Pathways
At Dolphins Water Polo Club, our junior program is about more than learning to play the game. We want every young member to see the opportunities available to them — whether their future is in the pool as a player, on pool deck as a coach, or poolside as an official.
There are clear development pathways within water polo, allowing juniors to build their skills, confidence and experience as they progress through the club.
Player Pathway
For players who want to take their water polo further, Dolphins provides opportunities to develop from junior competition through to senior and representative water polo.
Junior Water Polo → Senior / A Grade → State Teams → National Teams
Players can continue to develop their technical skills, game awareness, fitness and leadership while working towards higher levels of competition. For those with the ambition and commitment, the pathway can extend into State and Australian representative teams.
Coaching Pathway
Young members can also begin developing as coaches while they are still playing.
FlippaBall Assistant → Junior Coach → Senior Coach
Helping with FlippaBall is a great introduction to coaching. Junior coaches learn how to communicate with younger players, plan activities, teach fundamental skills and lead a team. With experience, mentoring and further qualifications, coaches can progress into junior and senior coaching roles within the club and beyond.
Officiating Pathway
Refereeing is another important pathway for juniors and provides a strong understanding of the game while developing confidence, communication and decision-making skills.
FlippaBall Referee → Junior Referee → Senior Referee → National Referee → International / World Referee
Juniors can begin by refereeing FlippaBall and younger competitions before progressing through junior and senior water polo. With experience, accreditation and continued development, referees can progress to State and National competitions, with opportunities for talented officials to eventually referee at international level.
Find Your Path
Not every junior's journey will look the same. Some may aim to play at the highest level, others may discover a passion for coaching or officiating — and many will experience more than one pathway during their time in water polo.
At Dolphins, our goal is to provide opportunities for juniors to belong, grow, compete and contribute, while developing skills that can keep them involved in water polo for life.
